L’ATS HS1, basée sur la Penske PC4, fut la première voiture engagée par l’écurie de Günter Schmidt. Elle révèlera très vite de gros défaut de tenue de route. Au cours de la saison, des améliorations seront portées pour résoudre ce problème, mais la voiture sera terriblement pénalisée en vitesse de pointe.
