Adolfo Schwelm-Cruz débute la compétition automobile en 1949, sur une Jaguar XK120, puis une Alfa Romeo 2300. Il devint, deux ans plus tard, champion national de voiture de sport.

En 1951, il participe au Grand Prix de Rome, et fini 6ème sur une Maserati A6G.

Il conduit une Cooper-Bristol en 1953, lors du Grand Prix d'Argentine, mais se retire après la perte d'une roue. Lors du Grand Prix Libre de Buenos Aires, il abandonne faute à une casse de l'arbre à cames.

Il retourne donc en catégorie voiture de sport sur sa vieille Alfa, et plus tard en catégorie Maserati Sports.
