Josef Peters commença la compétition dans des course à domicile au début des années 50, sur une biplace Veritas.
C'est d'ailleurs avec Veritas qu'il particpe au Grand Prix d'Allemagne 1952. Il abandonne sur casse moteur.

En 1953, il est en Formule 2. Josef décroche alors une 3ème place à Grenzlandring. La même année il participe au 1000km du Nürburgring avec Wolfgang Seidel, ils décrochent la 5ème place final et gagne dans la catégorie 1500 à 2000cc.
