En recrutant l’ingénieur Gustav Brunner quelques années auparavant comme assistant de Gentry, Schmidt a fait une très bonne opération pour son écurie. L’ATS D6, entièrement conçu par Brunner, est une voiture très finement dessinée, possédant une finition travaillée. Cependant, le manque de fiabilité du bloc BMW, ainsi que des erreurs techniques en tout genre vont ruiner tous ces efforts à néant.
