La Jordan-Peugeot 197 marque une grande évolution par rapport à la décevante 196. Cette machine est très effilée et élégante à la manière des Williams-Renault. Un gros travail a été effectué sur le module aérodynamique (pontons latéraux courts, modifications à l'arrière du capot, etc.). Peugeot remplit sa dernière saison de collaboration avec l'écurie irlandaise qui attend le moteur Mugen-Honda pour 1998. Jordan aligne aussi une nouvelle boîte de vitesses à sept rapports, très étroite.
Fiable et performante, la 197 permet à Jordan de se rapprocher des quatre tops teams de 1997, Williams, Ferrari, Benetton et McLaren. Les jeunes pilotes Giancarlo Fisichella et Ralf Schumacher, malgré leur mésentente, parviennent à signer de beaux résultats, en particulier l'Italien qui ramène deux podiums et lutte pour la victoire à Hockenheim.
La Jordan 197 marque aussi le passage à le livrée jaune pétant du sponsor Benson & Hedges, couleur qui symbolisera désormais l'équipe jusqu'à sa disparition.
